:: 2008 Nike Regional Skills Academy ::

On behalf of the Sport Youth Foundation, Inc. and Nike Grass Roots basketball I would like to welcome everyone to the 4th Annual Nike Regional Skills Academy. The purpose of this event is to instruct and showcase some of the best underclassmen talent in the Midwest. This is a college exposure event for student athletes who have a goal of playing basketball at the next level and earning a college degree.

This camp provides selected students with the opportunity to spend time competing against quality competition in games as well as hearing featured speakers discussing such topics as the mental approach to sports, and the recruting process.

The following procedures will be followed during the day's activities:

  1. Players will be assigned teams by camp coaches prior to the event. The teams have been determined by a players' height/position.
  2. Player will be coached by selected coaches from accross the state.
  3. Each athlete will play four games.
  4. Only man-to-man defense will be played with a limit of 10 players or less per team.
  5. Lunch will be provided for all athletes.
  6. Players will receive camp t-shirts and playing jerseys.
  7. Any profit from this event will go to the Sport Youth Foundation 4.0 Education Program.

This Skills Academy is a learning experience for the players as they compete vs. quality competition, and receive more exposure. We hope everyone will enjoy the day!

Sincerely,
Dr. James Dye,DPT,AT,CSTS

Purpose:

This is a fundamental skills development camp. It is a basketball camp that concentrates on discipline, fundamental development and academic strengthening.

We will teach you the fundamental basketball skills for your basketball development as well as life and academic lessons that will lead toward character development for your 5th quarter on life after basketball.

We will teach each player individually. These sessions will evaluate in detail the individual’s strength and weakness and will offer ideas to strengthen some of those weaknesses.

There will be a ratio of one coach to every ten (10) players. The camp is an intense 2 day program that will demand discipline, attitude and effort.

Stations:

Station teaching allows for the maximum usage of court time. Each station set consists of 8 stations lasting 15 minutes each, for a total of 90 minutes. Campers will be divided into station groups of 15 each by age. Campers will run through stations in different groups then they will play in games during the week. (Exception: Move-ups and Move-downs should be changed into station groups with similar ability, in order to give them the maximum benefit of station learning).

Campers:

Players will be divided into three (3) divisions, approximately 40 players each (4 teams per division based on grade status).

Academic Sessions:

Academic lectures will be divided into academic and life lessons that impact a campers life on and off the court.

Academic Session Material:

The Nike Junior Elite Camps are committed to academic excellence. These sessions are committed to development and refining the organizational skills necessary to achieve the greatest potential in the highly competitive academic environment both as a student and an athlete.

These sessions will assist in developing skills needed in organizing and prioritizing academic, athletics, social development and personal free time requirement. Students will recognize the need to receive extra instruction early in an academic subject.

GAME RULES

1. Teams are split into two units of five players, with your BEST FIVE playing together in the 2nd and 4th QUARTERS and your OTHER FIVE playing in the 1st and 3rd quarters. This is by design so that the best players in camp will play against each other. Clearly understand that you DO NOT BALANCE THE UNITS! If a team has only nine players, then the coach may designate a HORSE to play with the other unit. However, no player may play more than three quarters.

2. Substitute only for foul trouble, injury or discipline. Foul trouble is defined as four fouls in the first half. If a 2nd/4th quarter player (one of the best five) needs a substitute, that coach may insert any 1st/ 3rd quarter player. However, if a 1st/ 3rd player needs to be replaced, the opposing coach picks the player to negate, as much as possible, any advantage.

3. MAN-TO-MAN DEFENSE ONLY! No zones or zone presses. No double teaming in the back court until the 4th quarter. You may double team and trap in the half court, but it must be out of a man-to-man scheme.

4. Games are played in SEVEN MINUTE QUARTERS. The first overtime period is THREE MINUTES. The second overtime is played until one team LEADS BY TWO POINTS. Each team is allowed one additional time-out in overtime. We go to eight minute quarters in the playoffs.

5. TWO (2) TIME OUTS - PER HALF - PER TEAM. (No carryover - use’em or lose’em).

6. Shoot One-and-One on the seventh foul of the half and two shots on the tenth foul.

7. Coaches may walk the sideline from baseline to half court. Please do not cross half court unless absolutely necessary to make a teaching point.

8. The winning coach should sign the score sheet and GIVE IT TO YOUR COMMISSIONER

9. Coaches, please act PROFESSIONAL AT ALL TIMES!
